How to amplify a nylon string acoustic guitar

It is about time we included some info on mikeing up an acoustic guitar. This is just a little bit of advice you can use as a starting point. The acoustic guitar appears to be a difficult instrument to amplify as there are so many different techniques. Because of its strong construction and all round versatility, the Shure SM57 is one of the best microphones for amplifying an acoustic guitar. With nylon stringed acoustic guitars the high end is a bit weak and the lower frequencies boom out, so sometimes a mix of peizo and microphone works. Nylon strings sound more mellow than steel strings do when amplified by a peizo, but it depends on your guitar and your tastes! Try the SM57 about six inches away, pointed directly at the soundhole. Also, all of the commercially available piezo pickup systems will work fine. Magnetic pickups will not work at all.
