Flamenco emerged as a musical force in the late nineteenth century. Flamenco is the musical expression embraced by Andalusian gypsies, and was originally a form of singing. Dancers – and guitarists to accompany them – came along later as Flamenco developed into an art form that people from other parts of the world wanted to witness.

The flamenco guitarists that I will list here are guitar players who grew up learning the rhythms of flamenco and who embraced guitar playing from an early age. All guitarists have their critics amongst flamenco afficianados, so we need to look briefly at who is thought to be good and who is not so good, and why.

Ramon Montoya is at the top of the chain of flamenco guitarists whose work enjoyed world-wide popularity due to the emergence of the recording industry. He was the first flamenco guitarist to emulate the classical guitarists that were emerging at the turn of the century, by creating melodic falsetas, or “themes” that fitted into the character of the flamenco forms of song and dance. He was the first flamenco guitarist to remove himself from the singers and dancers to give concerts as a soloist.

Possibly the most influential flamenco guitarist ever, Nino Ricardo began his career in the nineteen-twenties. His advanced guitar technique and lyrical approach to the guitar made him the idol of flamenco guitarists even after the new wave of guitar players emerged in the nineteen-seventies. His recordings are distinctive due to his habit of humming as he played the guitar and his lack of fear of making technical mistakes.

The dominant force in flamenco guitar playing in the mid twentieth century was Sabicas. Sabicas made his debut as a professional guitarist while still a child, and became famous after relocating to New York and making records. He pioneered multi-track recording and dazzled concert audiences with his blinding speed.

By the early nineteen-seventies, practically all flamenco guitar records featured guitarists either reproducing the music of Ramon Montoya, Nino Ricardo and Sabicas, or who were heavily inspired by them. Paco De Lucia changed the face of flamenco guitar playing totally. Although the influence of the early masters could still be heard in his recordings, Paco also brought influences from jazz into his solo flamenco guitar records.

The early nineteen-seventies heard the music of two other young flamenco guitar virtuosos – Manolo Sanlucar and Serranito. Serranito’s technique led him to record music that was perhaps a little too busy for the tastes of many flamenco guitar afficianados and Paco De Lucia’s style somehow had the edge over Manolo Sanlucar in the popularity stakes but all three were the spearhead of a new wave of flamenco guitar playing which inspired interest in flamenco guitar of young people all over the world.

There is a continuous stream of flamenco guitarists coming up through the ranks. Names like Paco Pena, Vicente Amigo, Oscar Herrero and Tomatito are names to look for in music stores and on YouTube.

Many people looking for acoustic guitar lessons for beginners end up settling for the lessons available on YouTube or a website that features free guitar lessons. Sometimes the effort of researching the guitar teachers in your local area is just too much. Of course the internet is a great source of acoustic guitar lessons for beginners, so is it really worth the trouble to try out the local private teachers and lessons from music stores?

For one thing, there is the theoretical side of music. It’s not rocket science but sometimes beginners can be a little confused and worn down by this new language they need to learn just to play acoustic guitar. But if your enthusiasm for the guitar is strong enough, you will find a way to get through the challenges presented by guitar music theory.

If you feel that some acoustic guitar lessons for beginners that you have found on the internet are helping you learn to play the guitar, then keep going with those but you will most likely find that the occasional lesson from a live person will help you progress with your technique and understanding of music. After all, a video can’t encourage you to practice every day or watch you and correct your mistakes.

Are acoustic guitar lessons for groups of beginners a real alternative to one-on-one lessons? When you get a group of beginner guitar players together you will get people learning at different speeds. So if you have trouble understanding something, the teacher will have to give you less attention than you need or slow down the rest of the class to give you a way of catching up. Many guitar teachers will take on large groups and spread their guitar lessons rather thinly, or just take a group of three or four beginners, so that they can give everybody a fair chance.

Acoustic guitar lessons for beginners should give students an opportunity to learn the most common open chords and barre chords, some grasp of what transposing songs from one key to another involves and some basic strumming and finger picking patterns. You should also be taught basic things like tuning your guitar and changing strings.

So acoustic guitar lessons for beginners from a local teacher can be an enjoyable alternative to learning from the internet but you will need to think carefully about signing up for a whole course of lessons and whether group lessons are suited to your temperament.

Choosing acoustic beginner guitars is a major task for people new to guitar playing. One of the common issues novice acoustic guitar players have is the question of whether what they see as lack of progress is a natural part of learning to play the guitar, a fault with the way they play or there is something wrong with their new guitar. So let’s have a look at some matters you need to consider as a beginner guitar buyer.

When you go looking for your first acoustic guitar let the brands you see be a rough guide only. Go to as many music stores as possible and try out as many guitars as possible. If you are a total raw beginner, take a guitar playing friend with you and get them to play the guitars and pass on their opinion to you.

Although you should buy the best guitar your budget can stretch to, it is a good idea not to spend too much money on your very first acoustic beginner guitar. At least, not until you have had about six months of practice. Once you have had some experience of what it’s like to learn to change chords, and have seen whether or not you can apply yourself to a daily practice routine, then you can think about spending money on a better quality acoustic guitar.

There is a school of thought amongst acoustic guitar players that because nylon strings are kinder to your hands when you first start playing, it is better to buy a nylon string guitar first and switch to a steel string, if that is what you prefer, after your finger tips have grown callouses. It is true that steel strings can slice your fingers and it takes some time away from the guitar to let them heal, but at the same time, if you are faced with the choice between a decent steel string guitar and an unplayable piece of crap with nylon strings, then take the steel string, and just be careful not to drag your left hand fingers along the strings.

Without going into too much detail about the pros and cons of various brands and model, here’s a few decent guitars that you could look out for at your local music store or on ebay: Takamine, Epiphone, Alvarez, Yamaha, Ibanez. These are all good quality guitars that will last you through your initial stage as a beginner guitar player plus a few years neglected under the bed. Even though you can buy good guitars online, they could suffer from being shipped from one country to another, plus buying from a store or through local classifieds means you can see what you are buying.

When you begin to get the hang of guitar playing, one of the things on your to-do list will probably to get some tab for Spanish guitar pieces and see what it feels like to play some of that exotic sounding guitar music. When you start looking round, you will find that there is quite a bewildering range of Spanish guitar tabs from a bunch of artists you have probably never heard of.

One way to get a handle on the Spanish guitar repertoire is to go to YouTube and type “Spanish guitar” into the search box. Or if you have been doing some research on the web and have found the names of Spanish guitarists or composers, type their names in and see if you can find some of their work.

Here are a few names to start you off: Paco de Lucia, John Williams (the classical guitarist, not the movie theme composer), Rodrigo y Gabriela, Gypsy Kings. These artists are from different backgrounds but all are masters of that Spanish guitar sound.

Here is a video example of what an accomplished guitarist can do with a little knowledge of Spanish guitar techniques:

Flamenco guitar player, Paco de Lucia spent a good part of his childhood locked in his room practicing his guitar. He emerged with the a technique that allowed him to play whatever he wanted. Not only that, the blindingly fast picking that you will see featured in the video below inspired many fledgling guitarists all round the world to lock themselves in THEIR rooms. Some emerged with great guitar technique, others decided to give up the guitar altogether. Also seen in today’s video is Paco’s affection for jazz influences and “un-flamenco” instruments like the percussion and bass guitar.

Here is a video of Paco de Lucia in playing Entre Dos Aguas, the tune that made him a star in Spain in the early seventies:

Thinking of popular acoustic guitar songs, Peter, Paul And Mary come to mind. Not the ones in the Bible, the folk group from the sixties. At that time young people were interested in folk music. One of the few groups to make a financial success from the folk boom was Peter, Paul And Mary. They helped Bob Dylan become the legend that he is by making his songs accessible to the wider music-loving public. The ones who did not find a nasal whine romantic or, indeed attractive in any way. So here’s a lesson in getting together a repertoire of popular acoustic guitar songs: HOW you sing is probably more important than WHAT you sing.

Bob Dylan wrote the songs. He had the feelings that connected with a generation of angry and discontented young people. But Peter, Paul And Mary brought the composer and the audience together. So a popular acoustic guitar song need not be one that people have heard of before. It could be a song that you MAKE popular. Maybe not to a worldwide audience, but your own circle of friends is a start.

The Doors recorded a song called Light My Fire. It was a loud driving rock song. It was re-worked by Jose Feliciano as a Latin ballad and reached number three on the pop charts. To many music fans Jose Feliciano’s version of Light My Fire is the definitive one. Now THAT is a popular acoustic guitar song. Eric Clapton’s acoustic version of Layla is another example of a popular acoustic guitar song that started life as something totally different.

Of course don’t go the other way and totally forget acoustic songs that everybody loves, like Hotel California. This version is by The Gipsy Kings

Just to get you into thinking outside the box, this video is Hotel California sung in French by an Australian group called The Cat Empire:

The flamenco guitarists listed in this post are guitar players who grew up learning the rhythms of flamenco and who took to guitar playing from childhood. All guitarists have their critics amongst flamenco afficianados, so we should think about who is looked up to by other guitarists.

Ramon Montoya is at the pinnacle of flamenco guitarists whose work induced world-wide acclaim thanks to the recording industry. He was the first flamenco guitarist to copy the classical guitarists who were being noticed at the turn of the century, by bringing to life pleasant-sounding falsetas, or “themes” that fitted into the character of the flamenco forms of song and dance while at the same time giving non-gypsy audiences familiar-sounding music. He was the first flamenco guitarist to detach himself from the troupe of singers and dancers to play solo concerts.

The most loved flamenco guitarist ever, Nino Ricardo started his professional career in the nineteen-twenties. His formidable guitar technique and emotional approach to the guitar made him the leading light of flamenco guitarists even the arrival of the new wave of guitar players in the nineteen-seventies.

The ascendantt figure in flamenco guitar playing in the middle twentieth century was Sabicas. Sabicas made his first appearance as a professional guitarist while still a young person, and became renowned after journeying to New York and making records. He was one of the early pioneers of multi-track recording and dazzled concert audiences with his technical brilliance.

By the early nineteen-seventies, nearly all flamenco guitar records featured guitarists either duplicating the music of Ramon Montoya, Nino Ricardo And Sabicas, or who were inspired by them. Paco De Lucia updated flamenco guitar playing completely. The legacy of the early masters could still be found in his recordings, but Paco also injected ingredients from jazz into his solo flamenco guitar records.

The nineteen-seventies also noted the music of two other youthful flamenco guitar virtuosos – Manolo Sanlucar and Serranito. Serranito’s technique led him to record music that was possibly a little too complicated for the tastes of a number of flamenco guitar afficianados and Paco De Lucia’s style, one way or another, attracted more acclaim than Manolo Sanlucar.

This video shows what a technical monster Serranito is:

For new guitar players the internet is a significant repository of acoustic guitar lessons, so is it really smart way to spend a day to check out the local private teachers and lessons from music stores?

For one thing, there is the theoretical section of music. It’s not brain surgery but occasionally newcomers can be a bit baffled by this new bunch of symbols they must learn just to play acoustic guitar. But if your passion for the guitar is substantial enough, you will get through guitar music theory.

If you sense that acoustic guitar lessons that you have stumbled upon on the internet are assisting you learn to play the guitar, then persevere with those but you will, in all likelihood notice that the odd lesson from a live person will assist you keep going with your technique and understanding of music. After all, a video can’t boost you to practice every day or keep an eye on you and sort out your slip-ups.

Are acoustic guitar lessons for groups of beginners a realistic substitute to one-person lessons? When you get a group of beginner guitar players you will see people learning at several tempos. So if you have distress understanding something, the teacher will have to give you less attention or slow down the balance of the group to give you a prospect of catching up.
