Many guitar players are using the internet as a quick and easy means of finding free guitar music. The way of finding guitar music that first occurs to most of us is to turn to a search engine. Although search engines are improving all the time we still often get results that duplicate each other or simply lead to sites with music to sell.

In the category of guitar music I include not only music written using standard musical notation but also tablature, mp3’s, free guitar lessons and video clips. If you use a search engine to look for your guitar music it is always a good idea to read the pages carefully and investigate links thoroughly to find any hidden gems.

Free guitar tabs are still easy to get on the internet despite legal wrangles over copyright. In case you are new to looking for free tabs, there is conflict between musicians who create tabs for published songs. These tabs are the creators’ own work and should not be subject to copyright. The music industry is losing money through sheet music and tab sales so naturally they are trying to find ways to stop guitarists from sharing their tablature. This has resulted in some large tab archives going offline.

There are still some useful tabs available and a list of these can be found at Harmony Central which is a community for musicians.

Musica Viva has a searchable archive of free sheet music for classical and folk music.

If you have been searching for information on any subject you have probably visited about.com The guitar section of this site will keep you busy for days with free lessons, mp3’s, sheet music and tabs. This is a real gold mine of guitar music that has been online almost as long as the internet has existed.

The ClassicalGuitar Midi Archives is a collection of classical and flamenco guitar midi files featuring the most popular works by the most popular composers for guitar. This site is extremely useful for guitarists who need a quick way of listening to an unfamiliar piece of music before going to the trouble of learning it.

Steve McWilliam’s Guitar Pages has a huge collection of acoustic guitar tabs in the TablEdit format.

My Guitar Solo is a site dedicated to turning guitar players into soloists. Here the guitar music is focused on chords, scales, modes and licks. The basic idea is to provide guitar students with the tools to accelerate their progress as solo guitar players.

I just thought I would add some links to the chords for some songs by Bob Dylan. Just using the chords to learn the songs somehow seems more fitting for learning Dylan songs. Good news for everybody who slaves over sound files trying to learn to play guitar music from the original artist’s records. Quicktime has a speed control which lets you slow down the music without altering the pitch. Once you have a file playing, click on Window>Show A/V Controls and you’ll find a slider for controlling the speed. Here’s the Quicktime download link. Learning HOW a guitar player moves certainly adds a dimension to seeing and hearing WHAT he plays. If you are trying to learn from videos, quite often the action is just a bit too quick – especially a tricky little intricate bit. So here’s what you do. Start by downloading a video of your favorite virtuoso guitar player picking at the speed of light. YouTube Robot downloads videos from the net. It’s not free but you can get a trial version. Your videos will be saved to your computer as FLV files. Realplayer plays these videos but doesn’t change the speed. What you need now is one of the free programs that converts FLV’s to AVI, MPEG, WMV video files. smallvideosoft.com will do the trick. Slo-Mo Director will slow down your videos so you can see and hear what you want to learn. You can get a trial version or wait till someone puts one out for free. It’s only a matter of time.

Cool guitar chord finder

Find the guitar chord that suits your purposes with this great free tool.
The Chord Generator by Jim Cranwell has over 3 million chords in 14 different tunings.
Here’s the description:
“There aren’t any actual complete chord diagrams stored anywhere in this program (except on this help page). Every chord and variation is generated via an algorithm. Some variations work great for some types of chords but might not even give a result for others, so you might have to check all the chord variations to get a chord that you feel comfortable fingering, (the vary check box changes the vary drop down into a whole ‘nother set of variations). If a chord gets computed and has all the needed notes included in it but,it is not using all of the strings (like diagram), it is still a valid playable chord, just don’t use the x’d out strings (or increase the stretch). If a chord gets computed and doesn’t have all the notes included in it, it will get the six XXXXXX zap and won’t be displayed, and although there is an increased chance of this happening sometimes in alternative tunings, it is quite rare because the program automatically runs through all the different variations if it doesn’t find something at the variation you have tried.”
