Electric guitars use pickups to amplify the strings. The sound is converted to electrical impulses and carried to an amplifier. The original solid body electric guitar developed by Les Paul was made from a railway sleeper. This instrument served the purpose of producing music, but Les Paul decided to market his electric guitars with a “guitar shape” so the look would fit the name.

Electric guitars have control knobs for adjusting the volume and tone. They also have pickup selectors. These help vary tone by utilizing any of the available pickups on the guitar.
