I guess this is for people who are at the stage between getting their guitar in tune and going to their first lesson. The controls on your electric guitar can be set to your satisfaction in a short time but you will be fine tuning the settings for the rest of your life.
The number of knobs on your guitar can be somewhere between two and six. Basically your controls are for tone and volume with some models of guitar featuring controls giving you mixes of tone and volume for the different pickups.
If your guitar is a second-hand one you will need to experiment to get your settings to your taste. You will see a toggle switch that controls which pickup is active. Try the different combinations of pickups, scratching your pick against the pickup cover to see which pickup is active.
