The need to learn the major scale

Scales are the key to your learning how to play the guitar. The major scale is your basic do re mi . . . scale you learnt when you were young. This is a set pattern of notes with a set pattern of spaces – or intervals – between them. The pattern is TONE – TONE – SEMITONE – TONE – TONE – TONE – SEMITONE. A semitone is the interval between two adjacent frets on the guitar. A tone is the interval between two notes that are separated by a fret. So, the interval between E and F is a semitone and the interval between F and G is a tone. If you start with the note C, the major scale is C D E F G A B. Play it on your guitar and see how the pattern of intervals goes. The D major scale goes like this: D, E, F#, G, A, B, and C#. The pattern of intervals is the same in each case.
