A capo fits onto your guitar neck by means of a piece of elastic or a screw clamp to raise the pitch of the strings on your guitar. This will enable the guitarist to play further up the guitar neck without the need to use bar chords. You can get capos that only clamp four or five strings but you will usually see the ones that go across all six strings. One effect of using a capo is that it makes your guitar a little easier to play.
If you are a beginner guitar player a capo will allow you to change a song’s key to suit your voice without having to learn new chords. An advanced guitar player usually has enough knowledge of chords to eliminate the need for a capo but he might still use one because of the brughtness it lends to the sound of the guitar.
The capo used to be used in flamenco for solo playing because many guitarists preferred the sound of the guitar barred at the third or fifth fret. It also used when accompanying singers becaouse flamenco guitar players ofen only learn the basci chords in a couple of keys. Jazz guitarists sometimes use a capo to play along with other instruments wihout bothering to transpose.
