Changing your guitar’s tuning from E A D G B E to D A D G A D is a big step if you are a beginner but the rewards are great. This tuning emerged in the nineteen sixties and became very popular amongst folk guitarists. One of the most popular tunes played in DADGAD is “She Moved Through The Fair” which was originally published in a collection of Irish folk songs in the early twentieth century. Davy Graham, who is credited with giving the DADGAD tuning to the world in 1962 but Fairport Convention’s version really caught the attention of music lovers. Alan Stivell, Clannad and Sinead O’Connor are among the many other artists who have recorded this song.

A major attraction of the song is the romantic lyrics. Here’s a taste:

As she stepped away from me
And she moved through the fair
And fondly I watched her
Move here and move there
And then she turned homeward
With one star awake
Like the swan in the evening
Moves over the lake
