If you are going to take the course of learning to play the guitar for free you are going to need to focus. If you take a guitar course that you have to pay for you are guided by your teacher. He will tell you which chords to learn to play what songs, and he will probably give you lessons in several different genres. But if you are using free resources to learn guitar, you will need to establish your own direction.
There are certain basic things you need to learn like how to hold the guitar, how to hold the pick – things everybody needs to learn. Once you have a grip on the basics, your taste in music will probably be your guide. If you want to learn blues, for instance then the techniques you use will be the common ones for blues playing like say, hammer-ons and how to strum a shuffle beat. Rather than learning a whole lot of theory that you do not need, you just learn stuff like how to use triads for improvisation, what pentatonic scales and the mixolydian mode are. You already know what songs you like so let them be your guide. Narrowing down the list of things to do makes learning how to play guitar much more enjoyable.
