There’s more to playing rhythm than just guitar strumming lessons but learning to strum chords is a good start. If you want to learn to be a solo guitar player learning to play rhythm is important. It will give you an understanding of the guitar will help you to establish communication with the other members of the band.

If you can afford to pay a teacher for guitar lessons, group lessons will be a great way to learn rhythm. The conventional guitar learning wisdom says you should learn in one-on-one lessons but playing along in a group will quickly show you whether you are have a natural aptitude for rhythm or if you have to begin slowly and develop your rhythmic sense.

If you are taking free rhythm guitar lessons from YouTube for instance, you could introduce some variety by downloading the tab for your favorite songs and play the chords along to the song playing on a CD player. Hearing the original song in speakers along with your own efforts at playing the chords will be of more benefit than playing along to the song using earphones.

If you decide to learn rhythm guitar by playing along with songs, make sure you learn the chords to two or three songs at a time. Unlike the group guitar strumming lessons, at home alone it is easy to get stuck in a rut where you play the one song for weeks without making any real progress.

[..YouTube..] I use 7-chords and also dim to spice up the blues songs, simple powerchords are just boring to listen to in my honest opinion.
