The Stratocaster brought the sharp, thin “surf guitar” sound to the world. You can get a slightly more mellow tone by using the neck pickup or some combo of the three pickups but the Strat was identified so much with the rock ‘n’ roll and instrumental sounds of the fifties and early sixties that the groups that made up the British Invasion of the mid-sixties deliberately looked for other guitar brands.

When you are looking on eBay for a Fender Stratocaster you should have on hand some details on the features of the Strat models available. You can get this info from Fender’s website, guitar forums and Wikipedia.

eBay is a great place for shonky guitar sellers to peddle fake Fender Stratocasters along with dubious lines in all kinds of products. The origin of many fake Strats is Asia which is sometimes hidden by the vendor appearing to be selling from the USA.

eBay has a feedback system that allows you to get an idea of how well the vendor has satisfied his previous customers. If a seller you are interested in has nothing to hide, his feedback will be there for you to see. So be careful if you are thinking of dealing with a guitar vendor with no feedback or who has chosen to keep it hidden. Oh, and if someone is selling a Fender Strat for one hundred dollars, look out!
